Month: January 2012

  • Well, the Australian Open has started, and I've spent more time on my couch watching tennis and sleeping, due to the weird hours Down Under, than I think I ever have in my life. The more I watch, the more I fall in love with the sport. It's a vicious, vicious cycle.

Well, we had snow last week and the city seemed to be frozen. Today we have temps close to 60 and tornadoes. Seriously, Kentucky has the craziest weather ever. There's a saying around here, "You don't like the weather in Kentucky? Just wait a minute." As mild as our winter has been, much like the rest of the country, I am hoping to ride it out nice and smoothly. We'll see how that goes.

I called to check on my resume last week, and the lady that answered the phone was the one who I gave my resume to. She's the manager of the salon and she said that she passed it along to the owner and that they should be giving me a call this week. I am really hoping they call!

I am starting to get butterflies at the thought of moving. Six months is not that far away, and I am really starting to feel it. I am getting nervous! If I had the money saved up and didn't need to worry about an apprenticeship, I would pack up and move tomorrow. But the anticipation of saving enough money, finding an apartment, finding a job, et cetera, is making me nervous but so excited!

    Word of the Day: Wait

Quote of the Day: "You teach me the value of friendship every day."

    Homework: None.

  • I am going to see the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra tonight with my mom. It's in town for tonight only, and I am so excited about it!

I have found that since getting sober almost two years ago, my interests have really shined bright. I have always had interest in the arts, but I think now I can actually find value in those things. I can say with confidence that having a few friends interested in such things has helped me explore the artistic side of me as well. My friend Tait in Minneapolis has played a very important role in bringing my "artsy-ness" to the surface. On my trips to visit him, they have been filled with plenty of culture. Musuems, the orchestra, food, fine chocolate. Luckily he has some sort of semblance to knowledge in those categories, so it gave me a place to start once I started exploring those things for myself.

Now I'm really passionate about it. History, art, photography. I can't get enough. I guess it boils down to my love of learning.

Sometimes I feel like I'm playing catch-up. I spent so much time in the haze of a mania from drugs and alcohol that I missed so much, and sometimes I feel like I am making up for it now.

I certainly don't feel 30. But I feel like a teenager sometimes. Well, at least early 20's. I have read that when you start using drugs, your mental/emotional development stops. So maybe that's why I feel the way I do sometimes now that I've gotten clean?

I have been caffeine-free for four days. Well, I had a Coke Zero last night, but that's unusual for me. I hadn't planned cutting out caffeine, it just kind of happened by accident. And now I'm just seeing how long I want to ride this out.

If 2011 was the year that I came into my own, 2012 will be the year that I start building a kickass skyscraper on the foundation that's newly settled. Mark it.

    Word of the Day: Culture

Quote of the Day: "Words are often the easiest way to show kindness or affinity...especially when deserved."

Homework: Do you have enough culture? When was the last time you went to see a play? The museum? Watched a documentary? Perhaps it's time.

  • Months have passed since I last updated.

I wish I had something interesting to report.

I visited my future home, Philadelphia, during the last week of November. I had an awesome time, and did a lot of walking around/exploring the city. I even went to an AA meeting while I was there. There is tons of stuff to do, lots of people, and so much history. I am still on track to move at the end of May/beginning of June, and I can't wait! I still have a few things to take care of here, namely barber school. If I understood the woman I talked to at the Pennsylvania State Board, if I go to school here, I can do my apprenticeship in Philadelphia and get licensed in that state. It just won't carry over if and when I return to Kentucky. But I can worry about that when the time comes.

I have run into a little problem, however. When I last checked, my apprentice cosmetologist license would reduce the amount of time I'd have to spend in barber school. Well, I called today and that is only true once I become a master stylist, which would follow a six-month apprenticeship in a salon. My plan was to go to barber school here, for four months, finish, get my apprentice license here and then work in Philly. I am not sure where to go from here. A wrench has been thrown into my plan.

Fuck. Why can't things be easy? Nothing ever goes according to plan.

    Stay tuned.

    Word of the Day: Wrench

Quote of the Day: "Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as you ever can."

    Homework: None.
